      Interesting Q.
I did just create a PieFed acct, and could maybe test that out.

My phone is Android… what app were you wondering about?

I was just wondering if there are any Android clients for PieFed. Lemmy has a ton, I have like 5 installed on my phone (Sync, Jerboa, Thunder, Summit…), but I don’t think there’s any for PieFed?

Wait… isn’t PieFed just an instance on the Lemmysphere? So if you have a Lemmy app for Android, it should automatically see PieFed, right…?

(oh boy, I hope that’s the case, because otherwise we got a major problem with the potential migration, yikes)

If you want to stay on Lemmy, maybe europe.pub could be an alternative? Could be nice to be on a Europe-oriented instance.

I like PieFed a lot, but I’m not sure if there are any distinctly European instances out there. PieFed.social is run by a kiwi, which I have no issue with whatsoever.

Yeah, I suspect they chose .pub because it was the cheapest available top level domain they could find “europe” for. I’m not associated with them at all, and I don’t really know who’s behind it, but it seems like they’re doing a good job trying to create a European hub on here. :)

It was Blaze who found that PieFed could migrate entire communities over, far as I understand: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45876780?sort=Top

One of my big priorities here was to build a body of work that could be revisited and read at the user’s leisure, going back to the very first post here. Makes sense for me, of course, since I put in hundreds of hours gathering that content, formatting it, and writing the mini-articles.

So starting a new community in Europe.Pub (etc) would be nice and all, but it would also be like ‘starting over.’ After 22mos of hard and dedicated work on my part, that’s a bit much to swallow.

Still, arguably the most important aspects of all when it comes to an instance are: 1) what are its long-term prospects? and 2) how well is the place managed?, and 3) have their management staff found a way to deal with the inevitable bad actors that ultimately burned out the Lemm.ee staff…?

        Hello, I’m here

        We’re quite happy at https://piefed.social/

If you were to move your community there, this is how far the moved content would go: https://piefed.social/c/[email protected]?sort=old&layout=list&content_type=posts&flair= (so around 1 year old, when Piefed.social itself was created)

Not the whole content, but better than nothing.

For the 3 questions, feel free to post to [email protected] , that you can access from your Lemmy account, as any other Piefed community

          Right so, thanks, Blaze. ❤️

Oh bother, (this is a bit much… haha) but I really, seriously (whoof, laddie!) appreciate the amount of work you’ve put in to the entire project, and even how you’ve braced-me for what’s coming, and also what my dumbass-self should do in the wake of Lemm.ee going down, err… :S

Oof… but man, I feel like we really did NOT appreciate the absolute excellence that Sunaurus (our host) brought to the table, over the years, you know? Like-- man… if I could go back in time, I should have contributed more, daggit.

Indeed, if there’s ANY chance of our host maintaining even a -basic- level of our best, most popular communities, I’d be happy to contribute to what we do, here.

Emergency pointHELL YEAH, if you need some funds…?

Yeah, I think these are good priorities, and PieFed.social seems like a pretty reliable new home. I’m obviously a fan, considering that I’ve been using it since the start. :)

I’m just curious to find an instance that has the same hands-off approach to federation that allows me to choose what I see/block. Too many instance admins defederate on their own gumption, and while I’m sure there are reasons, I’d rather make the choice myself via blocking. I just found out about all this yesterday, and now it’s homework time.

Hmm, that’s disappointing to hear. That kind of thing should happen pretty rarely, based on my understanding of good policy, transparency, and health of the Lemmysphere.

Any examples, by chance? And backstory about possible ‘feuds?’

Tangent: there’s a “hidden” sub-URL on Lemmy instances where you can examine who they both link to and block (defederate), add /instances after any site; e.g. https://lemm.ee/instances

I’ve seen a number of folks mentioning or suggesting lemmy.zip (the whole .zip TLD gives me the willies, just feels wrong in my old bones) - I know nothing about them, but can examine their federation and it seems to be very open like lemm.ee is: https://lemmy.zip/instances (their sidebar seems to say they want gamers and techs but idk)

I just remember it being a thing a while back between World, Hexbear, ML, ExplodingHeads, etc where admins had a clash of views and decided to just sever federation. Like I get that some instances are run be wackos and some people don’t want to see certain certain content, but I’d rather make that choice myself as a user and block what I don’t want to see, as opposed to my instance admin making that decision for everyone. One thing I always appreciated about EE was that they defederated from spam and unsavory (ie CP) instances, but they left the majority of it to the user. I’m just not a fan of blanket bans, even if I agree with it.

            World, Hexbear, ML, ExplodingHeads

I mean… Hexbear is just… yikes. What a complete, total bag of extremist a-holes, and why in the world would any other instance entertain their BS, y’know?

“World” at least tries to carry the brunt of the server and user-load, whether that’s wise or not. But we can certainly admire that, amirite?

“ML” is arguably ‘tankie’ in nature, altho personally the main dev has always treated me well, and I really can’t say anything bad about those guys.

            ExplodingHeads

I don’t have the slightest clue what that is…

Absolutely, and I’ve had a lot of the more insane and extreme content block for a long time. That said, I don’t agree with admins making executive decisions on what users see and don’t see. In a similar vein, i stance admins are free to govern their servers as they please, which is why I’m bummed EE is going down, and why I’d like to find an instance that has a similar stand on federation.
